The cable is the part that transfers the spring’s lift to the bottom corners of the door. When it frays, slips off the drum, or snaps, that corner drops. Sumo Garage Doors in Westbury describes the result as a door that shakes, jerks, or leans, and says a cable that snaps or leaves the drum can bind in the track or come down crooked.
What you are looking at
Precision Garage Door Service of Long Island ties broken or frayed lift cables to track problems. If a cable snaps, Precision says, the door lifts unevenly and sits crooked. The same company lists a snapped lift cable among the usual reasons a door comes off its track, with bent tracks, worn rollers, loose hardware, and impact from a car.
Sumo groups frayed cables with worn rollers as the hardware behind a door that no longer travels level, and says its technicians replace cables and rollers as a set, then reseat the drums.
The drawing on this page is one end of that assembly: drum, cable, and the bottom of the door. It is the side that fails when the line lets go.
The price that is actually published
| Cable job | Who published it | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Lift cables, the pair | Island Door Pros, Plainview (April 2026) | $150 to $185 |
| Cable replacement, no dollar amount | Precision, Farmingdale | Listed as a repair. No cable price on the page. |
| Cables and rollers swapped as a set | Sumo, Westbury | Described. No separate cable price. |
Island Door Pros says cables wear slowly and then snap, and that the pair is the job because uneven tension throws the door out of alignment. Its repair table puts that pair under the single torsion spring line and above a roller set ($90 to $160 on the same table).
Precision’s repair page says the visit itself is $69, including the inspection and a recommendation, and that the fee is waived if you have them do the repair. It also says evenings and weekends are available at no extra charge, and that a repair includes a 25 point safety inspection. None of that is a cable part price. If a phone quote is only “the cable,” ask whether the $69 is still on it and whether the second cable is in the number.
Near salt water, Island Door Pros prices a coastal hardware step separately: galvanized springs and a stainless cable kit at $80 to $140 above the standard hardware, aimed at houses within about a mile of the bay or the Sound. That is an installation-page figure for a hardware upgrade, not the $150 to $185 repair pair. Ask which of the two you are being sold.
Leave the door where it is
Precision’s instructions for a crooked or off-track door are short. Stop the opener. Do not force the door up or down. Do not pull the emergency release cord. Precision says a door out of alignment has lost its counterweight and can drop, and that pushing rollers back into the track can cause injury. Sumo says to keep the opener off when the door is too heavy to lift, which is the usual sign of a snapped spring, and a loose cable belongs in the same “do not run it” category until someone has seen which part failed.
If the door is stuck open onto the driveway after dark, the emergency repair page is the one that sorts a tonight call from a morning call. Precision says it does not add a fee for evenings, weekends, or short notice. Other companies do. Ask.
Springs, because the cable rarely fails alone
A cable job and a spring job meet at the same shaft. Island Door Pros’ spring range is on the spring cost page. If one spring has already broken, get that price in the same conversation as the cables. Sumo says the strain from a tired spring spreads to the cables, the opener, and the track, and that spring and cable replacements are usually under an hour once the technician arrives.
What to ask before you approve it
- Is the price one cable or both?
- Are the drums and the bottom brackets included, or only the wire?
- Will you check the springs while the door is down?
- Is the visit fee credited if you go ahead?
- If you are near the water, is this the standard cable or the stainless kit, and which price is which?
- What is the warranty on the cables and on the labor, and what is the county license number?
