Garage Door Opener Repair

The motor hums for a few seconds, the light on the unit blinks, and the door does not move an inch. Opener trouble is often a small fix, and the opener itself usually tells you where to look.

The opener is the part you notice, so it gets blamed first. Sometimes it really is the opener. Sometimes it is a spring, a sensor or the door itself, and the opener is just reacting. Island Door Pros in Plainview lists a basic opener service call, to diagnose and adjust, at $85 to $150 (April 2026). A minute spent counting the opener’s flashes first tells you whether to ask for opener work or sensor work.

Read the flashes before you call

Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers are made by the same company and share one diagnostic system. Chamberlain’s support pages give these meanings:

What the opener doesWhat Chamberlain says it means
Main lights flash 10 times, door will not closeSafety reversing sensors are misaligned or something is blocking them
Lights flash 2 timesThe LOCK feature is on. Remotes are locked out, the wall control still works. Press LOCK to turn it off.

Newer models flash codes on up and down arrows, older ones on an LED next to the Learn button. Chamberlain says to find the model number on the label of the motor unit and open the chart for that model.

When the sensors are to blame

Ten flashes points at the two safety eyes near the floor rather than the motor. The owner checks Chamberlain gives for blocked or misaligned sensors, sun glare and loose wires are on our sensor repair page, along with what a sensor fix costs.

Long Island opener repair prices

Sumo Garage Doors published these installed prices in August 2026. Expo Garage Doors in Roslyn adds its own ranges in the right column.

RepairSumo Garage Doors, Westbury (Aug 2026)Expo Garage Doors, Roslyn (Oct 2026)
Diagnostic or service call$50 to $150, usually credited if you approve the repair
Remote, keypad or receiver$80 to $200
Gear and sprocket kit$110 to $250
Capacitor$110 to $200
Logic board$180 to $420
Motor, on a unit worth saving$250 to $550
Opener repairs in general$200 to $380, parts and labor

Sumo puts labor in Nassau and Suffolk at $85 to $150 an hour, with a surcharge of $75 to $150 or a higher rate for evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Booking a weekday daytime visit keeps you clear of that surcharge.

Repair or replace the opener

Sumo Garage Doors goes by the opener’s age:

  • under eight: nearly always worth fixing
  • eight to fourteen years: look closer at the quote
  • past fifteen years: parts get hard to find
  • replace when the repair passes half the price of a comparable new opener and the unit is past twelve years

Age matters for safety, too. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s rule requires openers made on or after January 1, 1993 to have entrapment protection, such as the electric eye sensors or a button you must hold down. An opener older than that may have none. If yours predates 1993, ask for a replacement price, and see our new opener page for the choices.

Test the reverse every month

The CPSC says the reversing feature should be tested monthly, and that a door which fails should be adjusted per the owner’s manual or checked by a trained technician. Genie lays the test out in three steps.

  1. Open the door and lay a 2 by 4 flat on the floor in the middle of the opening.
  2. Close the door with the wall control.
  3. The door should reverse within 2 seconds of touching the board.

Genie says if it does not reverse after you lower the close force setting, call a dealer, and that an opener which fails this test may need to be replaced.

Questions for the repair company

  • Do you service my brand, and do you carry the part on the truck?
  • Is the service call credited to the repair?
  • What is the price for the repair, and what would a new opener cost installed? Getting both lets you use Sumo’s half-price rule.
  • What warranty comes with the part?

Opener repair questions

How much does garage door opener repair cost on Long Island?
Sumo Garage Doors in Westbury lists a gear and sprocket kit at $110 to $250 installed, a logic board at $180 to $420 installed, and motor replacement at $250 to $550 (August 2026). Expo Garage Doors in Roslyn puts opener repairs at $200 to $380 with parts and labor.
Why do the lights on my opener flash and the door will not close?
On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers, Chamberlain says ten flashes of the opener lights means the safety reversing sensors are blocked or out of line. Two flashes means the lock feature is on, which shuts out the remotes while the wall control still works.
Is my old opener worth repairing?
If it is under eight years old, almost always, according to Sumo Garage Doors. Once an opener is past twelve, Sumo suggests replacing it when the repair would cost more than half of a comparable new one.
How often should I test the auto reverse?
Once a month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says. Genie's three step version, using a 2 by 4 laid flat under the door, is in the testing section of this page.
