Not every garage door problem has to be fixed tonight. A noisy roller can wait for a weekday. A door that will not close, a car you need in the morning, or a cable swinging loose cannot.
Precision Garage Door Service of Long Island lists the calls it treats as emergencies: a door stuck open, which leaves the house open too, a door that will not close or open when you need to get in or out, a door off its track, and hanging cables or loose hardware.
What to do until help arrives
- Stop running the opener. Sumo Garage Doors in Westbury says a door with a broken spring should not be operated again until it is repaired, because it can slam down or trap the car, and the motor strains against it.
- Keep everyone out from under the door. A crooked door has lost its balance, Precision says, and can drop without warning.
- Do not force it. The same company says not to force a jammed door, not to disconnect any hardware under tension, and not to pull the red release cord on a door that is off track.
What to tell the dispatcher
The more precisely you describe it, the more likely the first truck has the right parts. Say whether you heard a bang, whether the door is level or crooked, whether a cable is loose, whether the opener runs, and how big the door is. Island Door Pros in Plainview links a loud bang and a heavy door to a failed spring, and Sumo Garage Doors links a shaking or leaning door to frayed or slipped cables, so those details tell the dispatcher which parts to send.
Night and weekend pricing
Long Island companies do not agree on after hours pricing, so ask before you book.
| Company | After hours policy |
|---|---|
| Sumo Garage Doors, Westbury (Aug 2026) | Flat surcharge of $75 to $150, or a multiplier on the hourly rate, for evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays |
| Precision Garage Door Service of Long Island | No extra charge for weekends, emergencies, same day or short notice. Normal $69 service call, free with a repair |
Sumo puts the regular labor rate across Nassau and Suffolk at $85 to $150 an hour. If the door can be closed safely or left down and the car is outside, waiting for the morning rate is an option worth asking about.
Who answers around the clock
Eleven of the twelve company listings on this site show 24 hour hours on Google (October 2026). All Island Garage Door in Bayport, which is not in that snapshot, also says it offers 24/7 emergency repair across Long Island. Before you give your address, ask whether a technician can actually come tonight and what the visit will cost.
After the emergency
When the door is working again, ask the tech what else they saw while they were there. If one spring broke, read why the second one is usually close behind on the spring repair page.
